SFO to Downtown San Francisco: BART, Taxi or Rideshare
The fastest way from SFO to downtown San Francisco is BART, a train that takes about 30 minutes and stops at four downtown stations. A taxi or rideshare takes you to the hotel door, but no official page lists what it costs. Below, the five ways out of the airport are compared on cost, time, late arrivals, shuttles and rental cars.
The five ways out of SFO: BART vs shuttle, taxi, rideshare and car
You have five ways to get from SFO to downtown San Francisco. Tours are not one of them: a tour starts after you reach the hotel. BART is the train. A shuttle van is the shared door-to-door option, but SFO does not list one that serves downtown hotels. Taxis and rideshare drive you straight to your hotel. A rental car starts at the San Francisco airport car rental center, which you reach on the AirTrain Blue Line.
AirTrain is the free train that links all SFO terminals. It runs around the clock, according to SFO. You need it for BART and for the rental cars, so learn it first.
The best way into a city is the one that still works when your flight lands late and your bags are heavy.
Cost: BART vs taxi and rideshare from SFO to downtown San Francisco
BART is the only option with a fare you can check before you land. An adult pays the same fare to Powell St and to Embarcadero. Youth fares and Clipper START fares are half the adult fare, and senior and disabled riders pay less still, according to BART's fare data.
$11.80 was the one-way adult fare for BART from SFO to Powell St with Clipper in October 2026, as read in the 2026 San Francisco Travel Cost Study.
You pay with a Clipper card, or you tap a contactless bank card or a phone wallet at the fare gate. Tap and Ride covers adult fares only. Clipper cards are sold at the SFO BART station and in Apple and Google Wallet, according to SFO.
Taxis are metered. The SFMTA taxi rules set the meter at $4.15 for the first fifth of a mile and $0.65 for each further fifth of a mile or minute of waiting. There is a $6.00 SFO pickup fee on top, and the driver may pass all of it to you. SFO and the SFMTA publish no fare for the trip to downtown, so no number here would be honest. In short: a taxi to downtown costs the meter total plus the $6.00 pickup fee, and SFO does not publish that total.
Uber and Lyft show their price only in their own apps. Open the app at the curb and compare before you book.
Pro Tip A taxi fare is shared by up to five people, so a group of four or five pays one metered fare instead of four or five BART fares. Ask the app for the price of the same trip and compare.
Time and pickup spots: BART vs rideshare and taxi
BART takes about 30 minutes from SFO to downtown, and BART's own page says "just 30 minutes". The schedule data shows 32 minutes to Embarcadero. Midday on weekdays, a train leaves about every 5 to 10 minutes.
The SFO BART station is in the International Terminal. From any other terminal, ride the AirTrain to the Garage G/BART stop. Then take a Yellow Line train (to Antioch) or a Red Line train (to Richmond). Both run through Embarcadero, Montgomery St, Powell St and Civic Center/UN Plaza. Get off at Powell St for the cable cars and Union Square hotels, or at Embarcadero for the waterfront.
Rideshare pickup depends on your terminal. From Terminals 1, 2 and 3, go to Level 5 of the Domestic Garage. Wingz meets you at the Arrivals level. At the International Terminal, go to the Departures level center island, zones 12 to 17. Pickup staff work from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m., according to SFO.
Taxis wait at the center islands on the Arrivals and Baggage Claim level of every terminal. SFO publishes no drive time to downtown. A rush-hour drive can differ a lot from a midnight one, so check live times on 511.org before you decide.
Luggage and late arrivals: BART vs taxi and rideshare
BART runs from 4:58 a.m. to midnight on weekdays. The first train on Saturday leaves SFO at 5:47 a.m., and on Sunday at 8:08 a.m. If you land after the last train, you need a taxi or rideshare.
A taxi or rideshare takes you from the curb to the hotel door. BART takes you to a station, and then you walk or ride on. Powell St station is the start of the cable cars, and many hotels are close to it.
For a late arrival with heavy bags, a taxi is the calmer choice. For a daytime arrival with one carry-on, BART is quicker and has a known price.
SFO also says that Waymo rides at SFO are for select Waymo passengers. Waymo's own page says it does not offer service to SFO. Plan on a taxi or rideshare instead.
Shuttle and bus: shared van vs SamTrans 292
Shared door-to-door shuttle vans to downtown hotels are not published by SFO. The airport lists "Airporters" to Marin, Monterey and Sonoma, and hotel courtesy shuttles that serve only airport-area hotels, not San Francisco. SFO also publishes no price or ride time for a shared van to a downtown hotel. Ask your hotel if it runs its own pickup.
One public bus does serve downtown. SamTrans route 292 runs between San Francisco, SFO and Hillsdale Mall, and it stops at the terminals. The fare is $2.05 with Clipper. On weekdays a bus runs about every 20 minutes, and the ride to Mission and 1st Street takes about 80 minutes. Inside San Francisco it only drops off passengers on the way north. Its timetable is from February 2025, so check it before you rely on it.
The bus costs a lot less than BART, and it takes much longer. It fits a traveler with time to spare.
Rental car: car vs BART for the first days
A rental car is the right choice only if you leave the city soon after you land. You pick it up at the Rental Car Center, which you reach on the AirTrain Blue Line. SFO publishes no drive time or distance to downtown, so check live times for rush hour on 511.org.
Parking is the catch. Most downtown meters charge from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and some garages charge around the clock, according to the SFMTA. If you stay in the city for days, BART, Muni and cable cars cost less than a car sitting in a garage.
If a day out of the city is the reason for the car, a tour with pickup may fit better, because you skip the parking and the driving. You trade freedom for a fixed schedule, and the price is per person. Things to Do in San Francisco's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found that 41 of 204 listings (20 %) include hotel pickup. The Muir Woods and Sausalito half-day trip takes about 5 hours and starts with pickup, from €88.13 per person. The full city hop-on hop-off bus tour also lists hotel pickup and costs from €43.62 per person.

Your first day: from the station to the hotel and the first tour
Once your bags are at the hotel, the first afternoon is easy to plan. The hop-on hop-off bus with 17 stops runs from €49.94 per person, and a ticket stays valid for more than one day. The small-group vintage VW bus tour takes 2 hours, up to 8 people, from €75.67 per person. Each listing shows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. The ratings and review counts are: bus with 17 stops 4.6 (4,150 reviews, Big Bus Sightseeing), VW bus tour 4.9 (854 reviews, Painted Ladies Tour Company). Doing it yourself costs less, since you can ride Muni and walk, but a tour gives you a guide and a set route.
Not sure which neighborhood to pick for the hotel? Read where to stay in San Francisco before you book, because the best BART stop depends on it. Alcatraz is another first-day wish, but the island is closed from 26 October to 18 November 2026, so check the NPS notice before you plan around it. The Alcatraz tours page shows the current picks.

A tour is not a replacement for the ride from the airport. It is what you do after it, so use the first day to see the sights near your hotel.
Limitation: If you land at night or after the last BART train, none of this applies. A taxi or rideshare is then your only option, and a first-day tour can wait until the morning.
Plan your first afternoon after you land
Once your bags are at the hotel, these four picks cover a first look at the city or a day out of it. A tour costs more than a BART ride and a walk, but it saves you the planning, and you can skip it if you only want the sights near your hotel. Prices are from €43.62 to €88.13 per person, and each listing shows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
