Things to do in Golden Gate Park
The must-sees in Golden Gate Park are the Japanese Tea Garden, the de Young museum and the California Academy of Sciences. All three are close together in the east part of the park. Walking the paths and lawns costs nothing.
The park is next to Haight-Ashbury, so you can add the Haight and the Painted Ladies to the same day. To see how other parts of the city compare, look at the San Francisco neighborhoods.
- de Young museum: open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., closed Mondays. Adults pay $25; ages 17 and under are free.
- California Academy of Sciences: aquarium, rainforest and planetarium. Adults pay $49 to $55.
Japanese Tea Garden: free before 10 a.m. three days a week
The best time to visit the Japanese Tea Garden is 9 to 10 a.m. on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Entry is free then. The garden opens at 9 a.m.
Tickets are timed, and you must book ahead. Last entry is 5:30 p.m. from March to October, and 4:30 p.m. from November to February.
San Francisco Botanical Garden
The botanical garden is also inside the park, close to the Tea Garden. We could not confirm its current hours and prices, so check its own website before you go.
A one-day route through Golden Gate Park
Start at the east end, where the museums are. Spend the morning at the Japanese Tea Garden, the de Young or the Academy of Sciences.
Then head west to Blue Heron Lake for a quiet break. End the day at Ocean Beach, at the far west end of the park.
A bike makes this route easy. The self-guided bike day includes a helmet, a lock and a map. You pick it up behind the Music Concourse.
How big is Golden Gate Park?
Golden Gate Park is about 3 miles long and covers 1,017 acres. Walking from end to end takes about an hour without stops. Most visitors stay in the east part, where the museums are.
One of them is the California Academy of Sciences: an aquarium, a rainforest and a planetarium in one building.
Pair the park with a walk in another part of town. Our Chinatown and North Beach guide covers Coit Tower.
