2026 San Francisco Travel Cost Study

San Francisco trip cost calculator
Pick your nights, travellers, style and month. The hotel line uses the median Google Hotels price we read for your star class in that month. "Any time of year" uses the median of all 22 nights we read, October 2026 included. Meals and cars use figures from published guides. Hotel prices are shown as advertised and may leave out the city's hotel tax, so the tax line stays at $0: see hotel tax. You can copy a link to your budget and share it.

Short answer
- Budget $1,216 4 nights, 2 travellers
- Mid-range $1,856 4 nights, 2 travellers
- Comfort $6,268 4 nights, 2 travellers
Yes, San Francisco is a pricey city, and the hotel is the biggest cost. In our 2026 study a 4-star night cost a median $183 per room. Our default trip is 4 nights for two at mid-range, which is $232 per person per night. The month matters too: in our sample, a 4-star night cost $136 in December and $217 in June. Flights and hotel tax are extra, and so are drinks, tax and tip on meals.
How to spend less in San Francisco
- Look at December first. In our sample, a 4-star room cost a median $136 a night that month. In June it was $217, or 60% more. Each month rests on one Tuesday and one Saturday night. We read the months 26 to 299 days ahead, so part of the gap may come from how early we looked.
- Stay at a 3-star hotel. A 3-star night cost a median $115, and a 4-star night $183. Over 4 nights, that is $460 instead of $732.
- Get a Muni day pass if you ride a lot. One bus or train ride costs $2.85. The day pass costs $15, so it pays off from the sixth ride of the day.
- Ride the cable car on a pass. A single cable car ride costs $9. Two rides already cost more than the $15 day pass, which covers cable cars. For three days, the 3-day pass costs $35.
- Take BART from the airport. The train from SFO to Powell Street costs $11.80 per person, one way (BART fare, read 22 October 2026).
- Eat cheap, then splurge once. Guides put a cheap meal at up to about $15 per person, before drinks, tax and tip. A super burrito in the Mission costs $11.25, and a bag of dim sum in Chinatown less than $10. See the cheap eats.
Some of the best things cost nothing: walking onto the Golden Gate Bridge, a free walking tour and the free days at museums and gardens. See the free things to do. Flights are not part of this study, because their price depends on where you fly from.
What a San Francisco trip costs for two
Two people at mid-range spend about $1,491 on a trip of 3 nights. A stay of 4 nights comes to $1,856, and 5 nights to $2,221, without flights. That is about $1,111 for each person on a trip of 5 nights.
Each row is the same 4-night trip for two, at any time of year. It counts the hotel, 2 meals out per person a night and a Muni day pass for each night. It adds BART to and from the airport. It also adds 2 activities per person: San Francisco: Alcatraz Ticket, Ferry, & Self-Guided App (from $69) and From San Francisco: Monterey and Carmel Day Tour (from $106). A "from" price is the lowest option a GetYourGuide listing offers, so you may pay more. The official Alcatraz ticket costs $48, less than this tour. On a budget, meals count at the guides' top cheap-meal price, so that line is a ceiling. There is no car, and the hotel tax is not added. The last column is the total split per person and per night.
| Style | Hotel | Eating out | Activities | Muni pass and BART | Total | Per person per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget 3-star hotel, cheap meals | $460 | $240 | $349 | $167 | $1,216 | $152 |
| Mid-range Our default 4-star hotel, mid-range meals | $732 | $608 | $349 | $167 | $1,856 | $232 |
| Comfort 5-star hotel, one fine dinner a day | $2,568 | $3,184 | $349 | $167 | $6,268 | $784 |

Hotel prices in San Francisco by month
A hotel night in San Francisco cost a median $115 at 3-star, $183 at 4-star and $642 at 5-star, per room for two. For a 4-star hotel, December 2026 was the lowest month in our sample ($136 a night) and June 2027 the highest ($217).
We read 1,943 prices of 249 hotels on Google Hotels on 22 October 2026. We took one Tuesday and the Saturday after it in each month from October 2026 to August 2027, for 2 adults in one room. The exact dates are in the hotel CSV. We did not check them for events or holidays, so one busy night can move a month. Of these hotels, 53 are 3-star, 52 are 4-star and 10 are 5-star. The other 134 have fewer stars or no star rating on Google. Half of all 4-star nights fell between $153 and $243. These are advertised prices, and they may not include the hotel tax.
Month by month, for each star class
Google lists a different mix of hotels on each date. So we only compare a month with another month in the same star class. We rank the 10 months that carry no note. October 2026 is shown but not ranked, because we read it only 5 days ahead. September is missing: Google Hotels did not show prices that far ahead yet. So neither month can be set against the others.
| Month | 3-star | 4-star | 5-star |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 2026 read 5 days ahead, not ranked | $93 | $189 | $759 |
| November 2026 | $87 | $171 | $817 |
| December 2026 | $93 | $136 | $614 |
| January 2027 | $123 | $185 | $483 |
| February 2027 | $104 | $144 | $511 |
| March 2027 | $130 | $198 | $891 |
| April 2027 | $104 | $183 | $635 |
| May 2027 | $135 | $208 | $763 |
| June 2027 | $137 | $217 | $565 |
| July 2027 | $133 | $192 | $650 |
| August 2027 | $135 | $194 | $638 |
About these numbers
Each figure is a median per room per night for 2 adults, before any hotel tax, as Google Hotels advertised it. Each month rests on one Tuesday and one Saturday night. In November and January, the Tuesday had only a few 4-star prices, and they were very high. So read the lowest and highest months as true for our sample, not as a rule. We read the months 26 to 299 days ahead, so part of the gap may come from how early we looked. We read January 2027 and March 2027 deeper, with more listings per night, so those months hold more prices (194 and 229). Each 5-star month rests on 10 to 20 prices, so read it as a rough guide.
Weekends
How we compared weekends
A Saturday is not always dearer in San Francisco. We set each hotel's Saturday price against its price on the Tuesday before. That gives 657 pairs, but they come from only 11 pairs of dates, one per month. A 3-star hotel charged a median 5.7% more on the Saturday (143 pairs). For 4-star hotels the median gap was -1.8%, so about the same. For 5-star hotels the median gap was -17.7%, a Saturday discount, but it comes from only 10 hotels. The month changed the picture. In April and May, most hotels charged more on the Saturday (79% and 68% of them). In November and December, most charged less: only 8% and 14% charged more. Each month is a single Saturday, so one event can tip it.

How much eating out costs in San Francisco
A cheap meal in San Francisco costs up to about $15 per person. A mid-range restaurant meal costs about $38, and the guides range from $20 to $75. Fine dining costs about $360. All of these are before drinks, tax and tip.
These are published prices, not our own measurement. We quote each guide word for word, all read on 22 October 2026. The calculator takes the middle figure of each group and counts each source once. The cheap-meal figure is a top price, because the guides say "under" or "up to". Two mid-range figures are rough: sfstandard.com prices single dishes, and eurochange.es gives a figure for a budget trip. The fine-dining figure includes tasting menus at top restaurants.
| Meal | Used in the calculator | Published figures |
|---|---|---|
| Cheap meal a top price: guides say up to this much, at a counter, food truck or takeout spot | about $15 median of 3 sources |

- Chinatown Good Mong Kok
A bag of dim sum to go costs less than $10. Expect a line, then eat in nearby Portsmouth Square.

Menu prices leave out sales tax and the tip, so the bill comes out higher than the menu. To taste the city with a guide, see our San Francisco food tours.

How much a rental car costs in San Francisco
A rental car costs about $47 to $77 a day in published averages, with $64 as the median figure. For the city alone, you can skip it.
These are published figures, not our own measurement. The low end, $47, is a California-wide average from Booking.com. The middle figure, $64, is the median of the 4 figures below. That is the midpoint of the two middle ones, $53 and $76, rounded. Two of the figures come from momondo, so momondo counts twice here. Your price depends on the dates, the car, insurance and fuel. Budget, mid-range and comfort in the calculator take the low, middle and high figure.

Advertised minimums, not typical prices: from $40 a day (momondo.com).
Do you need a car? Not in the city: Muni, the cable cars and BART reach most sights, and parking adds to the cost. Our default trip has no car. A car helps for day trips down the coast or to the parks.
Hotel tax, Muni and BART fares
Our hotel prices are as advertised on Google Hotels. They may leave out this hotel tax, and the calculator's tax line is $0. On the default trip, the tax applies to the $732 hotel line, so check whether your price includes it. Other Muni fares (SFMTA, read 23 October 2026): one bus or train ride costs $2.85, one cable car ride $9 and the 3-day pass $35.
Key findings of the 2026 San Francisco Travel Cost Study
- A 4-star night cost $217 in June 2027, $136 in December 2026.
For stays advertised on Google Hotels on 22 October 2026, a 4-star night in San Francisco cost a median $217 in June 2027 against $136 in December 2026, 60% more (per room per night, 2 adults; one Tuesday and one Saturday per month, 10 months ranked up to August 2027, each read once; October 2026, read only days ahead, is not ranked).
- 3-star nights ran from $87 (November 2026) to $137 (June 2027).
For 3-star hotels the advertised monthly median ran from $87 per room per night (November 2026) to $137 (June 2027), 2 adults; with 29 to 56 prices a month, single months move a lot.
- A 5-star night cost a median $642, a 4-star night $183.
The 10 five-star hotels priced in our sample were advertised at a median $642 per room per night for 2 adults across 22 nights from October 2026 to August 2027, against a median $183 for a 4-star night (the 5-star class from an extra search filtered to it, as Google's main list held too few).
- Saturday against Tuesday, same hotel: 5.7% at 3-star hotels, -17.7% at 5-star.
San Francisco Saturdays were not dearer across the board: the same 3-star hotel cost a median 5.7% more on the Saturday than on the Tuesday before it (143 hotel pairs, per room per night), while for the same 5-star hotel the median Saturday difference was -17.7%, a discount (93 pairs from only 10 five-star hotels, so a rough figure).
- A meal out: about $15 cheap, $38 mid-range, $360 fine dining.
Published guides put a cheap meal in San Francisco at up to about $15 per person, a mid-range restaurant meal at about $38 and a fine-dining menu at about $360 per person, before drinks, tax and tip (medians of a small set of cited sources, not our measurement).
- A Muni ride costs $2.85; the $15 day pass pays off from 6 rides.
On Muni a single adult ride costs $2.85 with Clipper or MuniMobile and a 1-Day Visitor Passport, cable cars included, costs $15, so the pass pays off from about 6 rides in a day; BART from SFO to Powell Street costs $11.80 one way per person (official fares).

What we measured ourselves
- Hotels: 1,943 prices of 249 hotels on Google Hotels, read on 22 October 2026. One Tuesday and one Saturday night per month, October 2026 to August 2027, 2 adults, one room; paid ads, listings without a price and duplicates left out. These are the prices advertised for those dates when we read them, not what guests later paid. Months are compared within a star class because Google shows a different set of hotels for each date. October 2026 was read at short notice; both are shown but not ranked. Star classes: Google's default hotel list for San Francisco held almost no priced five-star hotels per night (0-1 a month), too few to compare months within the 5-star class; so we added one extra Google Hotels search per night filtered to 5-star, same dates, 2 adults, one room; hotels already in the main search for that date are not counted twice (201 of the 1,943 prices). These count for the 5-star figures only; the all-hotel figures, the 3- and 4-star figures and month sample sizes use the main search alone: the all-hotel median rests on 1,742 prices. 2027-09 is not in the sample: the Saturday 18 September 2027 was beyond the dates Google Hotels prices yet (78 hotels listed, none with a price, read twice), so September 2027 has no weekend night; rows kept in raw/hotels-2027-09-not-used.csv.
- Activities: the "from" prices of the 115 tours and tickets on our 21 activity pages (the table above), as shown on GetYourGuide on 22 October 2026; the calculator offers 12 tours, one per activity page (2 of them from pages with too few per-person prices for the table). A "from" price is the lowest option a listing offers, not a typical price.
What we cite
- Meals, drinks and car hire: figures published by travel guides, food-tour companies and rental platforms, found in Google results in the United States and quoted word for word with their date. A range counts with its midpoint, each source once per group. Two figures come from pages written by users: the Crenn price from a forum thread on foodtalkcentral.com that quotes Eater, and a beer price from a Yelp search page. None comes from a page that shows a date in 2022 or earlier; many pages show no date at all.
- Tourist tax, fares: the San Francisco Treasurer, SFMTA.
How the calculator adds up
- Nights and days: the calculator counts per night. Meals, Muni passes and the per-person figure all use the number of nights. Any time of year: the median of all 22 nights we read, October 2026 included.
- Hotel: nights × rooms (one per two travellers) × the median for the style's star class in that month (or the whole year).
- Eating out: nights × travellers × meals a day at the style's meal price; in comfort, one fine dinner a day and the other meals at mid-range prices.
- Car: days × the style's daily price. Activities: the from-price per person or per group.
- Hotel tax: not added, as Google Hotels prices may or may not include it. Add the city's hotel tax to the hotel line if your price leaves it out.
- Transport: nights × travellers × the Muni day pass. Airport: two BART rides per traveller, SFO to Powell Street and back.
Each line is rounded to whole dollars.
