San Francisco to Napa Valley: how close is it?

Napa Valley is close: downtown Napa is about 50 miles north of San Francisco. The drive takes about an hour on a weekday and up to 2 hours on weekends. Sonoma is about an hour north too, by US-101 and Highway 37.

There is no train from San Francisco to Napa. You can take the ferry to Vallejo, then the VINE bus into Napa.

Want to plan it yourself instead? Here is how to get from San Francisco to Napa and Sonoma without a tour.

Napa and Sonoma wine tours from San Francisco, compared

Pick a full-day tour if you want three wineries; pick a half day if you have other plans. The full days take 8 to 10 hours. The half days take 5 to 6 hours.

  • Wine and redwoods: the Muir Woods, Napa and Sonoma day.
  • Tastings included: the coach day, the small-group day and both half days.
  • Tastings extra: the VW bus tour and the Napa picnic tour.
  • Already in Napa: the picnic tour or the Wine Train.

Wine tasting in Napa: how many wineries in a day?

Two or three wineries is the right number for one day. The full-day tours visit three. The half days visit two.

Each tour picks its own wineries, and they can change. If one winery matters to you, check the tour page before you book.

Napa Valley Wine Train: what it is and how to book

The Napa Valley Wine Train is a 2- to 3-hour ride through the valley in old rail cars, with lunch or dinner. It boards at 1275 McKinstry Street in Napa, not in San Francisco.

The meal is included; wine by the glass is extra. You can cancel up to 2 days before for a full refund. It does not suit people with limited mobility.

Small group, big bus or private: which style fits?

A small group suits people who want to talk with the guide. The small-group tour has up to 12 guests, and the VW bus up to 8. A big coach is cheaper.

On some coach tours the driver is also the guide. One coach tour has a wine expert who explains how wine is made.

Tasting fees, lunch and tips: what is included

Most tours from the city include the tasting fees, but lunch is usually extra. Only the picnic tour and the Wine Train include a meal. The Muir Woods day has a lunch upgrade you can add.

Tips are never included. One tour suggests 15 to 20 percent.

Napa or Sonoma? Wine tasting in Sonoma

You do not have to choose: most full-day tours visit both. Sonoma has Sonoma Plaza, where several tours stop for lunch.

For Sonoma only, the VW bus tour visits three Sonoma wineries and a wine cave.

Napa by car, and where to stay

You can drive yourself, but someone has to skip the wine. Plan an hour each way on a weekday, more on weekends.

For the Wine Train, stay in the town of Napa. The train boards there.

Booking tips for wine tours

  1. Check the pickup

Some tours pick you up at your hotel. Others meet at Union Square or near Fisherman’s Wharf. The picnic tour picks up in Napa only.

  2. Bring ID

Two tours say you must be 21 or older. Bring photo ID for the tastings.

  3. Book free cancellation

The tours can be cancelled up to 24 hours before for a full refund. The Wine Train needs 2 days’ notice.

  4. Eat before you taste

Lunch is not included on most tours. Have a good breakfast.
