Ways to see the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco

There are three good ways to see the Golden Gate Bridge: from a boat, on a bike or on foot. Pick by what you want most.

  • Easy: the one-hour bay cruise. You sit, and the boat does the work.
  • Cheap: a rental bike from €17, or the walk, which is free.
  • Active: a guided bike ride across the bridge to Sausalito.
  • Best photos: the catamaran sail, low on the water under the bridge.

By boat: bay and catamaran cruises under the bridge

A boat is the only way to pass right under the bridge. The bay cruise takes one hour and leaves from Fisherman's Wharf. The catamaran takes 90 minutes and leaves from Pier 39.

Both pass Alcatraz on the way. Sit outside for photos, but bring a warm layer.

By bike: rental, e-bike and guided rides to Sausalito

Biking across the bridge is free, and bikes can cross 24 hours a day. Many bike tours go on to Sausalito, with a ferry back.

Bikes use a different side of the bridge at different times. On weekdays they use the east side until 3:30 p.m., then the west side. On weekends they use the west side in the daytime.

On foot: walk the Golden Gate Bridge

You can walk the Golden Gate Bridge for free, on the east sidewalk only. The bridge is 1.7 miles long, so plan on about 35 to 45 minutes each way at an easy pace.

Walkers can use the sidewalk from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. until early November. From early November to early March, it closes at 6:30 p.m. On some weeknights it closes an hour early for building work.

Best views of the Golden Gate Bridge: Vista Point and more

The best view of the Golden Gate Bridge is from the water, under the span. On land, the classic spot is Vista Point at the north end, with a free car park and restrooms.

From the city side, the lawns near Fort Point and the Presidio look right up at the south tower. For a view from the west, walk the Lands End trail near the Sutro Baths.

Best time of day to visit

The best time to see the bridge is a clear afternoon. Summer mornings are often grey with fog. September and October are the warmest months, with less fog.

The bridge at night

At night, see the bridge from a sunset cruise on the bay. The sidewalk for walkers closes in the evening, but bikes can cross all night.

How to get there and where to park

The easiest way to get there without a car is by bike from Fisherman's Wharf, or on a hop-on bus. Parking at the bridge is limited.

The southeast lot by the Welcome Center has 37 spaces. It costs $5 an hour, for up to 3 hours, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Vista Point lot on the north side is free for up to 4 hours.

Golden Gate Bridge toll

Cars pay a toll only going south, into San Francisco. There is no cash at the bridge. You pay by FasTrak, a plate account, a one-time payment or a bill in the mail. From 1 July 2026, the toll is $10.25 to $11.25. Walking and biking are free.

Tips for the Golden Gate Bridge

  1. What to wear

Wind and fog can make the bridge and the bay cold, even in sun. Bring a jacket and layers for any boat, bike or walk.

  2. Check the ferry ticket

Most bike rentals do not include the ferry back from Sausalito. Ask at the desk, or ride back over the bridge.

  3. Know which side to use

Walkers always use the east sidewalk. Bikes switch sides by day and time, so follow the signs.

  4. Cancel for free if the weather turns

All six picks offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Check the forecast the day before.
